Goal Planning

Thank you for creating goals to support your scholars. As we discussed, i would like each of you to list one of your goals to improve scholar outcomes in the post below. Thank you, and I look forward to reading your goals.

  1. Linstrum and I are trying to turn his grades around, especially in Algebra where he has an "F". our goal is to turn that into a C+ by concentrating on homework completion and getting tutored on his ALgebra lessons twice a week.

  2. My scholars and I are working on being more focused during our lessons, which includes having their hw done prior to mentoring. Individually, I am working with one of my scholars to make sure her grades don't drop (by making sure to ask her about them), and with the other, to raise his English grade by working with him individually at the end of each session.

  3. For my 5th grade Kendra, she has an "A" in Math already. What I am doing with her now is trying to help her maintain the grade, by encouraging her to continue practising and reviewing her school work...she is a very smart girl anyway...makes life easy for me.

  4. I have a goal in mind for each of my scholars:

    1. For TeAnna- helping her with time management and organizational skills. In speaking with her mother and Mr. Matt it's come to my attention that a few of her grades are suffering due to missed deadlines. I want to show her the planner I use and also make more of a point to work "planner time" into our weekly lessons.
    2. For Aliyah- reinforcing the need for precision and accuracy. Aliyah typically picks up concepts pretty quickly and often finds her "own way" to solve problems. As a result, she sometimes is resistant to learn more structured methods of solving problems, especially if "her way" is easier. I'd like to help her get into the habit of showing her work and help her understand that, as math gets harder, it becomes more and more important to be able to trace the steps one takes in solving problems.
    3. Aliaya- get to know her better! Aliaya missed many Thursday night mentoring sessions in the fall due to soccer practice. She is very well-behaved in our sessions, but I don't feel as if I have discovered more personal ways to motivate her by tapping in to her particular interests.

  5. For my 7th graders, I would like them to develop a clearer sense of what their future goals are. The seminar we are doing, Covey, introduces goal setting abilities and clear paths to achieving them. Being on the brink of secondary education, it would be beneficial for them to figure out what exactly they want out of the next few years, and how to go about getting what they strive for.

  6. Tyrone set the following SMART goal regarding his Spanish class: to improve his class participation by checking in with the teacher at the end of class and asking for help. He committed to doing this every day. I am simply going to follow-up with him and see if did this. For both Jordan and Tyrone, we are going to continue to work on their incentive plans, which we developed together and score each week.

  8. This is only my third week with 7th grader Jovana and 8th grader Breana. They both seem dedicated and on the right track for success! My goal for them is to get to know me better and become more comfortable talking to me. They are great girls and right now I am focusing on getting to know their needs and goals.

  9. I have the following goals for each of my scholars:

    1. Tammy-Work on reading comprehension. Tammy is a good volunteer and enjoys reading (especially out loud), but I don't think she always considers what's actually going on on the page. I will encourage her to slow down, think about our book, and relate it back to her own experiences.
    2. Ymani-Work on maintaining focus throughout our lessons. Ymani is younger than my other scholars and sometimes has a harder time grasping the intention behind our activities. She is very imaginative, though, so I'd like to work on helping her apply our readings to her own life.
    3. Aliaya-Work on interpersonal relationships and leadership. Aliaya is very bright, but she has had difficulty dealing with scholars who are not at her same reading/comprehension level. I'd like to work on helping her maintain patience and let her take on more of a leadership role in our lessons.

  10. This is only my first week with my 7th grader Willard. My goals are to develop a comfortable working relationship with him and to assess what he needs to work on to improve his math grade.

  12. As a group, TeAnna, Aliyah, Aliaya, Ceneca and I have a goal of producing a HAP survey on the learning principles and then presenting the results at center in early March.

  13. I would like the members of my group to be comfortable enough with free writing to be able to write a poem or a paragraph on the spot, and then get up in front of the group to read it.

  14. Two things I'd like my 5th grade math group to work on are improving the speed with which they do simple additiona and substraction in their heads and avoiding making sloppy mistakes on problems that are easy for them to answer.

  15. One goal will be to contribute to one of my scholar's raising a Spanish grade by two grades. Ways in which I'll try to help that happen include: collaboration with the after-school homework folks, Mr. Matt, and Mr. Sam, to keep tabs on the homework getting finished; brushing off my own rusty Spanish and asking the scholar a question or two in Spanish each week and otherwise trying to provide motivation that language-learning is fun and useful; ensuring the scholar is committed to raising the grade. The timing for the goal to be acheived will be the end of the next marking period.

  16. My goal at this point is to get all of my scholars to submit their grades to HA. Currently, none of my three scholars (Yacho, Ymani, and Amirah) have handed in their grades. Turning in these grades is essential for setting goals in grade improvement. I will encourage them the week of 2/9 to hand in their grades.

  17. I'd like to work on respect, listening, and communication. All three of those are HUGE in having successful center sessions. If even one of those areas fails, accentuating our group's SPARC is very difficult. I appreciate my scholars' independent, self confident approach to our time together; but it is not always good for what we're trying to accomplish in the lessons.

  18. I would like to work on helping my scholars to achieve more in literature. I would like to feel more connected to what they are doing in their literature (language arts) classes at school. I will begin by checking in every week on their homework and asking about their current school lessons and if those lessons are related to what we are covering in their mentoring sessions.

  20. After reviewing the 8th graders' report card and meeting with a few of them afterwards, my main goal is to help each of them (esp. Nile since we created his goal planning sheet together) to focus and improve in the subjects their doing the worst in. For Nile, we decided to focus on Spanish, Science, and especially Math and English. I hope to continue to encourage him to be a dedicated and accomplished student so that he will hand in all of his assignments on time this quarter.

As a new tutor, I'd like to be able to bond to my students (both the 5th grade and 8th graders) so all of our tutoring sessions will be more successful.

  21. I would like for Tajh (Monday), Linstrom (Tuesday), to improve their grades by a full letter. Linstrom especially after looking at his grades. For thursday scholars, I would like to see more group accomplishment, rather than just Benjamin succeeding, or Ceneca, or Hunter.

    Mr. John S.

  22. My scholars, Keyon and Diamond, are doing well in math class this semester. My goal is to go beyond what our lessons cover, and teach them more advanced concepts relating to each lesson.

Hopefully this will help them truly master the concepts taught in each lesson and prepare them to take things a step further whenever they learn something new.

    - Mr. Gary
