Ward 6 Weekly update 11.1.10
Happy November everyone! It was so nice to see us wrap up October with some fun activities and mentors and scholars starting to really get to know each other. As we start a new month remember to take the time to get to know your scholars, and always push them above and beyond expectations.
Announcements:
Community Meeting: Please make sure you are fully participating in Community meeting.
Cleaning up: Mentors please remember to clean up with your scholars before you transition the next activity. This way we have less cleaning at the end of the time night.
Absent: Thank you to all the mentors who let me know in advance. Try to remember to shoot me an email if you know you are going to miss center. It’s always great if you email your scholars, or tell them the week before.
Geography Challenge: We have an impressive 22 scholars signed up for “The Geo Challenge” This is a great supplemental activity to pull into mentoring. Scholars that are not competing are still into learning about geography.
Shout outs:
Welcome to all of our new mentors!
Shout out to Ms. Nancy for Collaboration. Ms. Nancy shared lots of resources about Geography. They are so helpful, keep them coming!

Ward 6 weekly update!
Week in Review:
As Center gets into full swing, scholar management and discipline take center stage.
Providing scholars with support and clear expectations is a crucial part of what
makes Higher Achievement not just good, but great. Holding scholars
accountable and celebrating their accomplishments through positive reinforcement
are necessary parts of a successful relationship with scholars. As we move forward,
give equal attention to your support/ encouragement and discipline. Setting the
expectations now and holding scholars to them will make for a much more enjoyable
experience for you and the scholars. Here’s to a great week at Center. Continue to be
a part of the Ward 6 community- actively give shout outs, participate in Community
Meeting and Gathering Time, correct grammar, and if you need to, give checks.
`Mentor of the Week:
Mr. Tim- Mr. Tim makes a great mentor of the week because he models Higher Achievement’s commitment to excellence. He provided interesting and exciting learning experiences that actively promote a sense of belonging among our scholars! Mr. Tim also brought his scholars to the cafeteria early to help us clean up. I personally really appreciated this!
Announcements:
Center Closings: Center will be closed Thursday, October 28th.
Please check your groups in ISIS: As we are getting into the swing of things, I am trying to finalize scholars/mentors schedules in ISIS. Please login and check to make sure yours is correct. You can see this by looking at “My schedule”
Community Meeting: Mentors please join us for community meeting. It is important that you participate with our scholars fully. Building a community is what makes Higher Achievement and Ward 6 special. This week mentors have lots of activities to do in CM.
ATTENDANCE:
If you are going to be late, please call or email me. Your presence at center is very important. If you know of your absence ahead of time, it is your responsibility to look for a substitute mentor.
Remember it is Higher Achievement’s policy that after 5 unexcused absences you can no longer be a mentor. ~ If you think you will be absent more then three times please let me know so we can find you a buddy mentor.
Breast Cancer Awareness Bands: To support breast cancer awareness month, we have pink bands at center. They are $1 or 1 SPARC chip for scholars.
SPARC Store Stolen: This past week our SPARC store was removed from center. If you have any thing you would like to donate to rebuild it for scholars, we would greatly appreciate it.
Suggestions:
o Candy
o Silly Bands
o Books
o Games
o Book marks
o Anything really!
Ward 6 Achievement Center Definition of the Week:
Each week I’ll spotlight a Ward 6 Achievement Center Definition. The words are going to address things like culture and behavior.
Shout out (N): A shout out acknowledges positive scholar and mentor behavior. Adding positive contributions to Ward 6 culture. The scholar or mentor receiving the shout out should demonstrate traits of the Ward 6 Culture Constitution. Shout outs are tallied up and rewards are giving. You can also
Used in a sentence: “I’d like to give a shout out Antonae to for Academic Excellence. She was proud and confident in her abilities because she worked very hard during the math lesson and she didn’t give up when she encountered a difficult question.
Shout Outs
I’d like to give a shout out to every mentor! These last two weeks have been a little crazy, but you all have handled everything with such ease. Thanks for your patience and flexibility. Things will only get better.
I’d like to give a shout out to Ms. Kelly for jumping right into mentoring and keeping her scholars engaged!
I’d like to give a shout out to Ms. Mindi for constantly setting high expectations for her scholars!

Ward 6 Weekly 10.8.10
Week in Review:
This week marked our first week of mentoring. I enjoyed walking around center and seeing scholar’s actively engaged and mentors eagerly teaching. The first week of mentoring can always be a little shaky, but I was delighted that everyone stepped up to my challenge and really took the time to build a relationship with your scholars.
Announcements:
Respecting our space:
I want to remind everyone that we are lucky to have the great space that our center is in. That being said, we want to respect our space by leaving it nicer than how we found it.
- Please make sure the cafeteria is cleaned up before we come to Gathering Time. It is important to remind scholars of this when you end mentoring.
- Mentors using the 3rd floor classrooms, please make sure you return the room to how you found it. Check that:
o Desks are returned to the proper place
o All paper/trash is picked up
o Chalk board is cleaned off before you leave (if you use it)
Nightly Schedule:
5:50: Scholars come down to the cafeteria from study hall/electives. Mentors please join scholars at the tables and help them with community meeting sheets.
6:00: Tables are cleaned in preparation for transition
6:05: Community Meeting starts
6:25: Community Meeting is over - Transition to mentoring
7:35: Mentoring ends. Cleaning up of space begins
7:40: Transition to Gathering Time
7:45 Gathering Time - Scholars should leave backpacks at the table
8:00: Scholars are dismissed
8-8:15: Mentor check in at the tables in the cafeteria
