Volunteer Opportunity

Greetings mentors,

My name is Jessica Thomas, and, if you don’t know me by now, I am the Ward 6 Community Outreach Coordinator for Higher Achievement. I also am, more importantly, a 6th grade math mentor on Thursday nights for three lovely scholars! As you all know, mentor support for everything our scholars do is crucial. For this reason, I would like to request your help with something!

What: Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells is hosting a MARCH MADNESS TEEN HEALTH FAIR! There will be a basketball tournament, entertainment, and refreshments provided. A wide variety of agencies, such as the DC Department of Health, the Southeast White House, and DOES (offering summer jobs) will be at this event. Free information and services will be provided for HIV, STDs, teen pregnancy, diabetes, violence and abuse prevention, and other important health-related issues.

When: Saturday, March 7, 2009, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Registration is at 10:00; the keynote address is at 10:45; the health fair runs from 11:45-2:00, with lunch provided; and then the basketball tournament begins at 2:00.

Where: The Greenleaf Recreation Center, 201 N St. SW (accessible via the Waterfront metro stop on the green line)

Although I am not quoting him directly, Mr. Matt envisions a small team of Higher Achievement scholars marching onto the court, wearing their bright green Higher Achievement T-shirts, and taking home the gold, with some mentors cheering along the sidelines. (And, of course, he envisions a day full of learning about important health issues).

If any of you is interested in going to support a team of our scholars at this event, please let me know, so that I can make further arrangements.

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Jessica
