Mentor Shout Outs for May 1, 2009

Spirit:
-To all of our Catholic Mentors for the positive infusion of energy you have brought to our community. It was great to have you at Center this year. I hope to see you all again next year.

-To our Mentor Advisory Council of your spirit and commitment. This newly created leadership body has stepped up and been very visible and engaged at Center. Comprised of Mr. Rick, Ms. Sarah, and Ms. Danette, this group has done an amazing job of being present and engaged on behalf of our Center.

Academic Excellence:
-To Ms. Janice and Ms. Amy for your continual push for academic excellence for your scholars. Moreover, I want to shout you out for an engaging and creative lesson you created for your scholars last week. Great job!

-To Kate Bateman for initiating the idea to have a career fair and pushing it into action. This event was amazing for the scholars and provided them with an opportunity to connect with their future. Thank you for coming up with this idea and seeing this idea through.

Respect:
-To our 8th grade team of Mentors for modeling how to respectfully address conflicts and work through them in a positive manner. Many issues arose this week with the 8th graders that you handled with respect and patience. It is extremely important for them to feel heard and respected, and you have all done an amazing job of working through situations in a way that respects our scholar’s needs. Thank you for being good models for our future leaders.

-To Ms. Erin Brookes for your amazing ability to be patient and respectful in managing the 7th graders. Your boundless energy and positive spirit was integral to making that seminar a successful one.

Collaboration:
-Thank you to all the Tuesday Mentors for your collaboration in making our inaugural Career Fair a great event.

-To Ms. Jessica Thomas, Ms. Kristi Smith, and Ms. Katherine Roboff for collaborating with me to make the Career an awesome event. All of your tireless work prior to the event, and your flexibility during the event really epitomized SPARC at work. A huge thank you to you all.

-To all of the mentors for your contributions to our Stop, Start, and Continue activity at Center last week. Your feedback is so valuable to our continued program development.

Shout Outs for the week of April 10, 2009

Spirit:
-To Mr. Rick for all the “Hapsters” spirit and overall spirit you bring to Center. Thanks for your boundless energy.

-To our Catholic Volunteers- Every night you bring much needed energy to Center. Your positive energy and ability to relate to our scholars have had a huge impact on them and on the Ward 6 community. Thank you all for all that you bring to our community.

Academic Excellence:
-To Ms. Betsy for challenging Jordan and facilitating engaging learning opportunities for him. Your incorporation of trivia and academic focus is very encouraging for Jordan and pushes him to continue to excel.

-To Mr. Wes for your creative implementation of the lessons. You do a great job of engaging the scholars in fun and creative ways that tap into their individual strengths.

Respect:
-To Ms. Elizabeth for facilitating a respectful resolution of a conflict between your scholars.

-To Mr. Everett for all the work you have put into creating a mutually respectful environment in your mentoring sessions. Great job!

Collaboration:
-To Ms. Janice and Ms. Amy for fostering a challenging collaborative learning environment for your scholars.

-Ms. Zinethia, Mr. Hassan, and Ms. Jessica for collaborating as a group to mentor your scholars and support one another. Your relationships with one another and teamwork serve as an excellent example for our scholars.

Shout Outs for the week of April 3, 2009

Spirit:
A huge shout out to Ms. Lynsey and Ms. Kate for helping Mr. John clean out the scholar meal trays and for helping me set up for Mr. Matt’s birthday celebration. It was outside of the scope of your work to support us in this way so thank you for helping out. Your work was truly appreciated.

To Mr. Drew for always looking for ways to bring new and exciting projects and opportunities for our scholars. The scholars are going to love the robotic arm project, thanks for helping to make that happen


Academic Excellence:
To Ms. Shamika for conducting a challenging and engaging math lesson Monday night. I would also like to shout you out for your outstanding planning for having an activity on hand for the scholars to do after completing their lesson.

To Ms. Zinethia for creating an awesome literature lesson for her scholars and sharing it with her fellow 7th grade mentors. Thanks Ms. Zinethia for all of the work you put into this activity.

Respect:
To Ms. Aileen for demonstrating a great deal of respect in working through behavioral issues with her scholar. Great job Ms. Aileen.

Collaboration:
To Mr. Dana for collaborating with Ms. Marci and her scholars while subbing for her on Monday. You did a great job of eliciting feedback from the scholars and making them feel listened to. Thank you for doing such a great job of modeling a collaborative environment.

To all of the mentors, parents and scholars for the special SPARC you bring to center. Thank you for assisting in making Mr. M@'s birthday a memorable one.

Shout Outs for the week of March 20, 2009

Spirit:
-To Mr. Laz for modeling and encouraging positivity for your scholar at Center.
-To Ms. Valeria for encouraging Noelle to participate in this year’s Ambassador Competition.

Academic Excellence:
-To Ms. Liz for challenging Mecca to think critically in response to her questions about the ambassador competition.
-To Ms. Christine for challenging Mekiya to speak during community meeting and gathering time
and providing the necessary support to make that a successful risk taking experience.

Respect:
-To Mr. Jon Sitko for the tremendous patience and respect you show to your scholars. You honor their learning styles and give them the space to learn and grow in a way that is respectful and encouraging.

Collaboration:
-To Ms. Jessica T. for collaborating with Mr. Matt and I to facilitate the Women’s History Month Challenge. Thank you for all of your work in leading this and making it happen.
-To Ms. Kate and Mr. Tim for collaborating on (what sounds like) a great end of the semester project.

Shout Outs for the week of March 13, 2009

Spirit:
-To Ms. Nancy for demonstrating spirit by making get-well cards for her sick scholar. Thank you Ms. Nancy for going the extra mile to show you care.

-To Ms. Caroline for your spirit in supporting us all by holding the scholars to high expectations. Continue to discipline them and expect them to be great.

Academic Excellence:
-To Mr. James C. for your commitment to excellence. The intensity with which you interact with our scholars encourages them to raise their expectations of themselves and challenges them. Thank you for pushing and encouraging them.

-To Ms. Jessica S. & Ms. Zinethia for an outstanding Tuesday night jeopardy with the 7th graders. To see all the 7th graders engaged, working together and genuinely excited to be at Center and learning was one of the highlights of this year. You both did an amazing job. I hope to see more of this.

-To Mr. Joe for a job well done on his Psychology exam.

To Mr. Rick S. for modeling respect in working through a difficult situation with your scholars.

Collaboration:
To Ms. Janice Cane for collaborating with her scholars to create a fun and engaging mentoring session.

Spirit:
-To Ms. Jessica S. for spearheading a grade wide academic bowl for the 7th graders. This is a positive and exciting way to unite and challenge the 7th grade scholars.

-To Ms. Tonya, Ms. Sarah and Ms. Monique for your amazing energy and spirit in supporting our scholars through the High School Placement process. We could not do it without you.

Academic Excellence:
-To Ms. Jessica T. for an engaging and creative math lesson. The scholars were engaged challenged and had a lot of fun. Great job!

-To Mr. Michael & Ms. Meghan Mc. For working to create the most effective learning atmosphere for their scholars.

Respect:
-To Ms. Betsy T and Mr. Andrew A. for taking the time to listen to your scholars in working through challenging situations. Thank you for modeling respect in your conflict resolution.

Collaboration:
-To Ms. Lynsey and Ms. Danielle for the great collaboration exhibited in teaching your lesson on Thursday.

-To Mr. Hassan, Ms. Jessica S, & Ms. Zinethia for modeling collaboration by organizing a 7th grade competition. Great job!

Spirit:
-To Mr. Jon S. I really appreciated your learning spirit this week in our technical sessions. Thank you for your positive energy, creative ideas, and outstanding participation on both nights.

-To Mr. James C. for the spirit and tenacity you have shown in supporting Jamal. Your motivation is refreshing and inspirational. Thanks for coming aboard and caring so deeply.

Academic Excellence:
-To Ms. Julia B. for engaging Malika in a challenging way. She craves challenges and your high expectations promote her continued growth. Great job!

-To Mr. Brandon P for making math and learning fun for Sydney. You do a great job challenging and supporting her. Thanks for helping to build her confidence.

Respect:
-To Ms. Betsy for the respect shown in managing your scholars through a tough night. You did a great job respectfully challenging Tyrone’s attitude, while giving him ample opportunity to change.

-A huge shout-out to the Tuesday night mentors for completing the highest percentage of their session feedback forms this week. This was a dramatic improvement over last week and a great effort on the part of all of you. Thank you!

Collaboration:
-To Ms. Mary K. for the outstanding collaboration you displayed with your scholar in planning the lessons with your scholar.

-To Ms. Jessica T, Ms. Nicole and Ms. Yasmeen for collaborating with me to make our history bowl an awesome event. Thanks for all of your help.

- In preparation for the absence of our college mentors, we have arranged for speakers to come present to the scholars on a variety of topics. Thanks to everyone who reached out and help facilitate these learning opportunities for our scholars.

-To Ms. Juliann for the great spirit and energy you have exhibited at Center in working with all of your scholars. You have come aboard and been a model of positivity and commitment to excellence. Great job!

-To Mr. Jon Sitko & Mr. Tim for being the highest scoring pair on our quiz this week. Awesome job! You will be receiving your t-shirts next week.

Academic Excellence:
-To Mr. AJ for your creative and scholar centric teaching. Thank you for implementing learning activities that get the most out of your scholars.

-To Mr. Brandon for pushing Sydney to complete all of her math homework and positively encouraging her throughout the night.

-To Ms. Yasmeen modeling how to challenge and support scholars in a meaningful way that respects the individual potentials of each of her scholars.

-To Ms. Kendra for an awesome first week. Great job relating to your scholars.

Academic Excellence:
-To Ms. Rachel for encouraging your scholar and supporting her academic success. You received a shout out from her mom, which is the ultimate compliment. Great job!
-To Ms. Elizabeth for encouraging Raheem to be more thoughtful and focused in his academics. It has really paid off this year and his SPARC is beginning to shine through. Great job!
-To Ms. Layla for the flexibility you exhibit in academically supporting your scholars. The boys continue to excel academically and your flexibility helps to meet their needs.

-Welcome back to our Catholic University mentors, your positive energy and spirit were greatly missed and are a welcome addition to Center.

-To Dr. D for academic excellence. Your effort in creating a much needed Math clinic for our 7th grade scholars is much appreciated.

-To Mr. Rick for showing great collaboration. Thank you for expressing your concerns and collaborating to create opportunities for your scholars to be successful.

-To Mr. Matt H. for spirit. Thank you for the commitment and leadership you’ve shown in creating the survey with your scholars.

-To Ms. Erin B. for respect. You did an amazing job of holding Jalen accountable during mentoring while respecting his needs. It was great to see you support and challenge him in a positive and genuinely effective manner.

-To Ms. Elizabeth, Ms. Chrissie, for encouraging Raheem & Jessica to enter the Literary Love Poetry contest. Way to go 8th grade mentors. You all have four entries thus far. Great job!

-To Mr. Tim for encouraging and supporting your scholars through the poetry writing process and having them both enter the Literary Poetry Competition.

-To Ms. Tonya, Ms. Sarah, & Ms. Monique for academic excellence. You do a great job of being flexible and helping the scholars through their application process. All of the guidance, support, and love you have shown the eighth graders has really made a big difference.

-Ms. Naima for your tremendous spirit. The girls look forward each night to mentoring and the fun energy you bring to them.

-Mr. Yasmeen for Academic excellence. Great job challenging Ceimone to think further and deeper during mentoring.
