Week In Review:
We are the champions! Jordan Person brings home the Golden Bee Trophy at the Spell off this past week. Flash back to Wednesday night…It was down to two scholars, and you could cut the tension in the room with a knife! Emily from Alexandria steps up to the microphone…
Pronouncer: “Ms. Emily, your word is corrode”
Emily: “corrode…C.O.R.O.D.E.”
Judge: “I am sorry that is incorrect”
She missed only one “R”. If Jordan spells the word correctly he will be the winner! Jordan calmly adjusts the microphone to the correct height…he waits…
Pronouncer: “Mr. Jordan…you word is Varnish”
Jordan: “Varnish…can I have it in a sentence? Can I have the definition?”…
Jordan: Varnish..V.A.R.N.I.S.H…Varnish”
Judge: “That is correct!”
The crowd goes wild!!!!!
Jordan wins the Spelling Bee! Jordan is an outstanding 8th grader, who has been diligently applying to high school. He recently was accepted to A Better Chance, a fantastic program that helps financially and socially with high school. Jordan has demonstrated what it means to be a scholar, and I can personally say I am very proud!

February 2, 2010 – Literary Love Poetry Competition (LLPC)
Our Literary Love Poetry Competition is a great event that showcases scholar poets. Every scholar should submit at least one poem for consideration. Therefore, I am advising literature mentors in advance that you will play a role in preparing scholars for this contest. About three weeks prior to the event (which, given all of the holidays in January, more or less corresponds to our first week back after break), literature groups should begin to focus on poetry. All literature mentors should plan on starting with the following lessons the week of January 11th:
5th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 11
Week 2: Lesson 12
Week 3: Lesson 13
6th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 10
Week 2: Lesson 11
Week 3: Lesson 12
7th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 10
Week 2: Lesson 11
Week 3: Lesson 12
8th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 10
Week 2: Lesson 11
Week 3: Lesson 12
If these lessons are out of sequence for your pacing, you can return to any skipped lessons after the poetry lessons have been completed. Please let me know if you have any questions.
