Week in review:
This was a fantastic start to Mentor Recognition Month and to our spring semester. Mentors and scholars collaborated to work on the mentor crossword puzzle. Four of our star fifth graders completed the puzzle correctly! Collaboration and support was really the theme of the week. Mentors really helped out on Thursday by taking in more scholars into there groups! The mentors at Ward 6 truly exemplify what it means to be a mentor, and I thank you!
Announcements:
-NO CENTER MONDAY IN OBBSERVANCE OF THE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HOLIDAY!!

Session feedback:
It is extremely important that all mentors submit session feedback. This is important not only to track scholars from year to year, but for our data for the grants that we receive. Our primary goal is top high school placement and session feedback is crucial in this Next week, I will give you an opportunity to fill out your session feedback form at Center.

Lesson Tracking for Math Mentors:
Most math mentors around lesson 4/5, I would like you to look at the next few lessons with your scholars, and see what they already know. Then I would recommend checking in with me and skipping ahead.

February 2, 2010 – Literary Love Poetry Competition (LLPC)
Our Literary Love Poetry Competition is a great event that showcases scholar poets. Every scholar should submit at least one poem for consideration. Therefore, I am advising literature mentors in advance that you will play a role in preparing scholars for this contest. About three weeks prior to the event (which, given all of the holidays in January, more or less corresponds to our first week back after break), literature groups should begin to focus on poetry. All literature mentors should plan on starting with the following lessons the week of January 11th:

5th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 11
Week 2: Lesson 12
Week 3: Lesson 13

6th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 10
Week 2: Lesson 11
Week 3: Lesson 12

7th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 10
Week 2: Lesson 11
Week 3: Lesson 12

8th grade lit: Week 1: Lesson 10
Week 2: Lesson 11
Week 3: Lesson 12

If these lessons are out of sequence for your pacing, you can return to any skipped lessons after the poetry lessons have been completed. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mentor of the week:
Shout out to Mr. Tim Woods for being our newest MAC mentor; this is a big honor, and will help support mentors at Center. Thank you for referring a friend to Higher Achievement, who will start mentoring next week. Mr. Tim is Mentor of the Week because he exemplifies mentoring at Higher Achievement. He takes an energetic but patient approach to mentoring, and because of this, he has formed a strong bond with his scholars. Mr. Tim will be leading Gathering Time on Tuesday with his scholars.

Shout out:
Shout out to Mr. Robert Chandler for your spirit! Mr. Robert will be volunteering with us three days a week this spring; he is also an alumnus of Higher Achievement. Thank you for coming back to Higher Achievement and committing to your community!

Shout out to Ms. Erica for her collaboration in working with our scholars on poems. They where reluctant at first, but they wrote some truly spectacular poems. She is a good example of how being positive and enthusiastic about something can really get scholars excited. It is our job to push scholars above and beyond expectation. Ms. Erica really showed us how we can do this.
